A recumbent cycle that employs a drive train with a drive shaft, to transfer driving torque from the pedal crankshaft to the driven wheel of the cycle. The drive train includes a variable gear ratio transmission, permitting a rider to select a gear ratio that affords a good bio-mechanical match of a rider's strength to the torque required to propel the cycle under various conditions. A sliding seat assembly is also provided that is adjustable in the fore-aft direction. An electric-assist propulsion system not coupled to the rider-powered drive train, that employs an electric motor integral to the wheel, is optionally present on the cycle.
