Methods are disclosed for the synthesis of cyclitols from substituted arene diols which are produced by the microbial oxi- dation of substituted benzenes. The disclosed methods allow control of relative stereospecificity upon addition of each functional group to the six-membered ring. Cyclitols produced by such methods are also disclosed.
