A system and method for branching a telephone call. The system is a network having a first call branch (316) connecting a pivot node (304) and an origination node (302), a second call branch (318) connecting the pivot node (304) and a release node (306), and a third call branch (320) connecting the release node (306) and an alternate node (310). The method includes the steps of initializing (Fig. 2) the origination and release nodes (302, 306) to inform them of the pivot node's ability to branch the call; creating a fourth call branch (502) between the pivot and destination nodes (304, 308), and switching the call from the third call branch (320) to the fourth call branch (502).
