An automatically disinfected or sanitized door handle device comprises a housing containing a bath of disinfectant. A continuous handle member is contained within the housing. A hand grip portion of the handle member is exposed to a user. Thrust by the user on the grip portion causes movement of the handle in the direction of thrust, thereby biasing a resilient member. Upon release of the handle grip, the resilient member returns to its unbiased position, actuating a driven linkage and inducing a step-wise rotation in the handle member through the bath of disinfectant, and exposing a disinfected hand grip portion to the user.
