The present invention provides the discovery of a new Streptoccus protective antigen (herein designated Spa) which has been identified and isolated from Steptococci. Spa is a surface antigen district from M protein which evokes opsonic antibodies that are protective against multiple serotypes of streptococci. The invention further provides isolated Spa polypeptides, proteins, peptides, and antibodies against the same, as well as nucleic acids encoding Spa polypeptide and peptide antigens. Also provided are methods for identification and isolation of a Spa polypeptide, therapeutic compositions comprised of Spa antigens or antibodies and methods of their use in protecting an animal against a Streptococcus infection.
La présente invention concerne la découverte d'un nouvel antigène protecteur de Streptococcus (désigné sous le nom de Spa) qui a été identifié et isolé des Streptococci. Le Spa est un antigène de surface distinct de la protéine M qui évoque des anticorps opsoniques qui servent de protection contre de multiples sérotypes de streptococci. L'invention concerne également des polypeptides, des protéines, des peptides Spa isolés, et des anticorps contre ces derniers, ainsi que des acides nucléiques codant les antigènes peptides et polypeptides Spa. L'invention concerne en outre des méthodes d'identification et d'isolement d'un polypeptide Spa, des compositions thérapeutiques comprenant des antigènes ou des anticorps Spa et des méthodes d'utilisation de ces derniers visant à protéger un animal contre une infection de Streptococcus.
