A medical device for advancing or retracting an elongate member is disclosed. The device is made up of a flexible tube. The elongate member is connected to a bead. The bead and elongate member are disposed axially within the tube. An advancer is provided which squeezes the walls of the tube together around the bead. The elongate member is thus advanced or retracted in the tube. The bead is provided with grooves to facilitate the flow of fluid through the tube. The elongate object may be an obturator or a probe for detecting a physiological parameter. Also disclosed is a a method for advancing or retracting an elongate member. The method has the steps of connecting the elongate member to a bead-like object, enclosing the elongate member and the bead within a hollow flexible tube, squeezing the tube near the bead-like object and imparting a substantially axial force to the tube such that the force is transmitted to the bead, thereby advancing the bead and the elongate object axially along the tube.
Instrument médical permettant de déplacer en avant ou en arrière un élément allongé. Cet instrument est constitué d'un tube flexible. L'élément allongé est relié à un jonc. Le jonc et l'élément allongé sont disposés axialement à l'intérieur du tube. Un dispositif d'avancement permet de serrer les parois du tube ensemble autour du jonc. L'élément allongé est ainsi déplacé en avant ou en arrière dans le tube. Le jonc présente des rainures afin de faciliter l'écoulement de fluides à travers le tube. L'objet allongé peut être un obturateur ou une sonde servant à détecter un paramètre physiologique. Egalement divulgué dans le cadre de cette invention est une méthode d'avancement ou de retrait de l'élément allongé. Cette méthode consiste à : relier l'élément allongé à un objet en forme de jonc; entourer l'élément allongé et le jonc à l'intérieur du tube flexible creux; serrer le tube près de l'objet en forme de jonc; exercer une force essentiellement axiale sur le tube de façon qu'elle soit transmise au jonc, ce qui a pour effet d'avancer le jonc et l'objet allongé axialement le long du tube.
