On a coiler drum (1) with radially movable spreading segments (2) arranged on the circumference, a drum body (3) and a draw rod (4), the spreading segments (2) and/or the drum body (3) and/or the draw rod (4) are formed as magnets. A method for operating such a coiler drum provides that the spreading segments (2) and/or the drum body (3) and/or the draw rod (4) are formed as electromagnets, and that the supply voltage to the electromagnets is switched on when the beginning of the strip is wound on, is reduced during the rolling and is increased again when the strip is unthreaded.
