- 41 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An intermediate for use in forming a reagent for analysis of biological solutions is provided comprising a solid phase and an undercoating of inert material covalently or absorptively coated onto the solid phase. Additionally, a reagent is provided in which a binding partner of a reactant to be captured in a test assay is coupled to theundercoating. The solid phase may comprise superparamagnetic particles typically having highly irregular surface structures including small pores which consume binding partner in traditional loading procedures. In the inventive reagent, undercoating fills such small pores and covers the solid phase surface, reducing non-specific binding and allowing tailored loading of binding partner onto the solid phase.
