Disclosed are a method and device for the determina- tion of specific gravity in aqueous systems, particularly urine. The invention improves upon the known systems for detecting specific gravity by the use of a polyelectro- lyte polymer and pH indicator by the addition of a crown ether ionophore which enhances the ability of the reagent system to indicate the fluid's specific gravity.
