There is disclosed an inductive power transfer system comprising a primary unit and a secondary device separable from the primary unit, the primary unit comprising a power transfer surface and more than two field generators each operable to generate an electromagnetic field, the field generators being located at different positions relative to the power transfer surface, the secondary device comprising a power receiver having a secondary coil, the system further comprising: determining means for determining at least one of the position and the orientation of the power receiver relative to the power transfer surface; and controlling means for controlling the field generators such that at least one first field generator and at least one second field generator, selected in dependence upon such determination, are active in a substantially opposite sense to one another so as to direct magnetic flux through the secondary coil thereby supplying power to the secondary device, and further such that a third one of the field generators is inactive so that fewer than all of the field generators are active simultaneously.

L'invention concerne un système de transfert de puissance inductif comprenant une unité primaire et un dispositif secondaire pouvant être séparé de l'unité primaire. L'unité primaire comprend une surface de transfert de puissance et plus de deux générateurs de champ destinés à générer un champ électromagnétique, les générateurs de champ étant situés à des emplacements différents par rapport à la surface de transfert de puissance. Le dispositif secondaire comprend un récepteur de puissance pourvu d'une bobine secondaire. Le système selon l'invention comprend également : un moyen d'évaluation permettant de déterminer au moins l'emplacement ou l'orientation du récepteur de puissance par rapport à la surface de transfert de puissance; et un moyen de commande destiné à commander les générateurs de champ pour qu'au moins un premier générateur de champ et au moins un deuxième générateur de champ, sélectionnés en fonction de l'évaluation, soient actifs dans un sens sensiblement opposé l'un à l'autre, de sorte à orienter le flux magnétique à travers la bobine secondaire, ce qui permet d'acheminer la puissance vers le dispositif secondaire, et pour qu'un troisième générateur de champ soit inactif, de sorte que tous les générateurs de champ ne soient pas actifs en même temps.
