ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A seal assembly for use with two relatively movable elements to be sealed, and comprising a primary seal unit and an associated wear sleeve. The primary seal unit includes a casing and a seal element with at least one portion adapted to be biased into snug, fluid-tight sealing contact with one surface of the wear sleeve. The wear sleeve has a generally cylindrical portion having a surface pattern formed by metal cold flow; the pattern includes at least one hydrodynamic pumping element having a contoured portion radially offset from the remainder of the surface of the cylindrical portion of the wear sleeve. The method includes positioning a wear sleeve in a patterned drawing die and moving a drawing punch along the wear sleeve skirt to elongate the skirt while reducing the skirt thickness, and at the same time causing the metal of the skirt to cold flow so as to create a pattern on the skirt surface that is complementary to the pattern on the drawing die.
