This invention relates to apparatus and methods for detecting human tissues, and in particular for detecting very small anomalies such as tumors in a human breast. The invention includes tissue mapping, the detection of tissue anomalies, generating an electrical signal and graphical data corresponding thereto, and automated tissue imaging and sampling for characterizing detected tissue anomalies. The invention includes apparatus and methods for detecting anomalies such as lumps and subcutaneous fat in mammal tissue by means of computer-controlled palpation. The apparatus and methods include detection device capable of movement in three dimensions over a selected portion of the body. The detection device includes a palpation probe that is brought into contact across the selected portion of the body, palpating each selected portion in a sequence of movements to measure relative differences in tissue density. The apparatus also includes a scanning device for mapping the selected portion of the body, detecting tissue color, or detecting temperature. The apparatus also includes a locator device for positioning the detector or scanning device for accuracy and repeatability of palpation and scanning over a series of periodic investigations. The apparatus also includes a sampling device for obtaining tissue samples from the selected tissue that may be used to characterize the cells of the selected tissue.
L'invention concerne un appareil et des proc~d~s permettant de d~celer des anomalies dans les tissus humains, en particulier pour d~celer de trs petites anomalies comme les tumeurs du sein. Aux fins de l'invention, on peut r~aliser les op~rations suivantes: cartographie des tissus, d~tection des anomalies de tissus, fourniture de signaux ~lectriques et de donn~es graphiques correspondantes, et imagerie automatique et ~chantillonnage des tissus pour caract~riser les anomalies de tissus d~cel~es. On peut d~celer des anomalies du type grosseurs ou zones de graisse sous-cutan~es dans les tissus mammaires par palpation informatis~e. Un dispositif de d~tection permet les mouvements en trois dimensions sur une partie du corps d~termin~e. Ce dispositif comprend une sonde de palpation mise en contact sur la partie du corps vis~e, ce qui permet de palper chaque zone selon une s~quence de mouvements afin de mesurer les diff~rences relatives de densit~ des tissus. Il existe ~galement un dispositif d'exploration pour la cartographie d'une partie du corps d~termin~e, la d~tection de la couleur des tissus ou la d~tection de temp~rature. Il existe encore un dispositif de localisation pour positionner le d~tecteur ou dispositif d'exploration en assurant la pr~cision et la r~p~tabilit~ de la palpation et de l'exploration sur une s~rie d'examens p~riodiques. Il existe enfin un dispositif d'~chantillonnage de tissus permettant de caract~riser les cellules des tissus consid~r~s.
