LIGHT SCATTER ESTIMATION METHOD WITH RANGE SCANNER AND DEVICE Inventor: Tonis KASVAND ABSTRACT A range scanner measures distances to surface elements in a scene and can measure the back scatter of the scanning laser beam to obtain a "gray level" value at the same points where the distance readings are taken. The back scattered illumination values are only obtained of the light from the scanning laser. The proposed improvement to the scanner allows light scattering measurements to be taken from many directions, in different spectral bands (colours), and with polarized light, as desired, while all the readings remain in registration with the distance values. The device simplifies industrial inspection of products, improves estimation of spectral properties of objects during copying of object shapes for electronic transmission, archival, reproduction, etc.
