1,6-Dibromo-2-naphthol is efficiently hydrodebrominated to 6-bromo-2-naphthol without the generation of unacceptable amounts of non-recyclable waste and without the use of costly materials by reacting it with sulfur dioxide in the presence of a base. The reaction is suitably conducted at moderate temperatures in an inexpensive solvent, such as water or a water-alcohol mixture, and is typically completed in 1-2 hours, after which the 6-bromo-2- naphthol can be converted to derivatives if desired.

On procède à une hydrodébromuration de 1,6-dibromo-2-naphtol de manière efficace en 6-bromo-2-naphtol sans générer de quantités inacceptables de déchets non recyclables et sans utiliser de matériaux coûteux en le faisant réagir avec le dioxyde de soufre en présence d'une base. La réaction est effectuée de façon appropriée à des températures modérées dans un solvant peu coûteux tel que l'eau ou un mélange eau-alcool et est généralement achevée au bout d'une ou deux heures, 6-bromo-2-naphtol pouvant être ensuite transformé en ses dérivés si on le désire.
