The present invention provides a method for sensitizing hypoxic cells in a tumor to radiation, wherein nitric oxide is delivered to target hypoxic cells through the administration of a nitric oxide-containing compound that spontaneously releases nitric oxide under physiological conditions without requiring the presence of oxygen. Also provided are methods of protecting noncancerous cells or tissues in a mammal from radiation, sensitizing cancerous cells in a mammal to chemotherapeutic agents, and protecting noncancerous cells or tissues in a mammal from chemotherapeutic agents, all by administration of the same compound.
La présente invention concerne un procédé de radiosensibilisation des cellules hypoxiques d'une tumeur. Le procédé consiste à apporter du monoxyde d'azote aux cellules hypoxiques cibles au moyen d'un composé libérant le monoxyde d'azote sous des conditions physiologiques ne nécessitant pas la présence d'oxygène. L'invention concerne également des procédés de protection radiologique des cellules ou tissus non cancéreux d'un mammifère, de sensibilisation des cellules cancéreuses des mammifères aux agents chimiothérapiques et de protection de cellules ou tissus non cancéreux desdits agents chimiothérapiques, tous ces procédés faisant intervenir l'administration des mêmes composés.
