A plurality of processors, each containing a statically replicated SS7 protocol stack, are interconnected with each other for inter-processor SS7 protocol layer message passing by a switch to form a scalable SS7 node. The interconnecting switch operates to allow the exchange of SS7 protocol stack related messages between an SS7 layer in one processor and a different SS7 layer in another processor. The node further includes an SS7 link interface associated with at least one of the plurality of processors, with the switch further operating to allow the exchange of SS7 protocol stack related messages between the link interface for one processor and the SS7 protocol stack in another of the processors. Still further, one or more processors include an application, with the switch further operating to allow the exchange of SS7 protocol stack related messages between a selected application resident on one processor and the SS7 protocol stack in another of the processors.
