A method and apparatus for reinforcing the outer leading edge of an auger flighting and a detachable reinforced auger flight. The method involves applying a strip material and securing it to the outer leading edge of an auger flighting by welding. The strip material is welded to the auger flighting as it is maintained in contact with the edge of the flighting. The apparatus includes guide rollers and holding means adapted maintain the strip in continuous contact with the rotating auger while it is secured to the auger flight during the application. The detachable auger flight is able to be mounted onto existing auger flights, thereby extending the life of auger when the initial portion has been worn or damaged.
