ABSTRACT A process for the hydrogenation of a carbon compound containing feedstock, such as coal and/or heavy oil, by reaction with hydrogen at elevated pressure and temperature in a reactor. The feedstock is introduced under pressure into the upper part of the reactor and passes downwardly through the latter, first through a heating or prereaction zone and then through a main reaction zone, while the required hydrogen passes upwardly in countercurrent through the reactor. The hydrogenation products are withdrawn at the top and the residue is withdrawn at the lower part of the reactor. Part of the contents of the reactor, which flows downwardly through the reactor is continuously recirculated from the main reaction zone into the heating or prereaction zone. The recirculation of the contents of the reactor takes place by means of an agitator provided for that purpose. The feedstock fed under pressure is divided into two components depending on the required temperature. One component flow is introduced into the heating zone and the second component is introduced into the main reaction zone.
