A process for the decontamination of radioactive materials which process comprises the steps of: i) contacting the material to be decontaminated with a dilute carbonate containing solution in the presence of ion exchange particles which either contain or have a chelating function bound to them; and ii) separating the ion exchange particles from the dilute carbonate containing solution. The radioactive materials which are treated may be natural materials, such as soil, or man-made materials such as concrete or steel, which have been subjected to contamination.

Procédé de décontamination de matériaux radioactifs qui consiste (i) à mettre en contact le matériau à décontaminer avec une solution contenant un carbonate dilué en présence de particules échangeuses d'ions qui contiennent ou présentent une fonction chélatante liée à elles, et (ii) à séparer les particules échangeuses d'ions de la solution contenant du carbonate dilué. Lesdits matériaux radioactifs qui sont traités peuvent être des matériaux naturels, tels que des sols, ou des matériaux fabriqués par l'homme, tels que du béton ou de l'acier, qui ont subi une contamination.
