A method of serving data over a network from a server to a plurality of users, comprising the steps of maintaining a user database; receiving a request for data from a requesting user via the network, whereby a user account in the user database is required to give the user access to the data; identifying a no-account condition wherein the user cannot be identified from the user database; and updating the user database to add the user while the user is online. An apparatus for serving data over a network to a plurality of browsing users, comprising a processor, storage, memory and a network connection, wherein the processor is configured to maintain a user database in the storage; receive a request for data from a user via the network connection, wherein a user account is required to give the user access to the data; identify a no-account condition wherein the user cannot be identified from the user database; and create a new account in the user database for the user while the user is online.
