ABSTRACT A chemical analysis system is comprised of an ion mobility detector cell having an ionization region adjoining a drift region and a detection region adjoining the drift region, a repeller plate in the ionization region, an electrometer plate in the collector region, and further comprising a needle-shaped restrictor axially disposed in the ionization region insulated from the cell, apparatus for feeding a supercritical fluid carrying chemicals to be detected into the ionization region cell as the restrictor, apparatus for charging the restrictor to a predetermined potential relative to the repeller plate, and apparatus for maintaining a high potential difference between the repeller plate and electrometer plate whereby chemical ions are collected by the electrometer plate for detection.
