Swirl-type flowmeters measure the volume flow rate of a fluid by utilizing the precessional motion of a vortex in a tube. The precession causes cyclic variations in velocity and pressure fluctuations whose frequency depends on the flow rate. These fluctuations diminish at low flow rates, limiting the useful range of the meter. The invention is an improved swirl-type flowmeter comprising a flow tube which is downstream of a set of fixed vanes which impart a swirling motion to the fluid. The swirling fluid is then caused to precess as it passes from the flow tube into a collection chamber of increased cross-section. An annular step of increased diameter is provided at the exit of the flow tube which causes a substantial increase in the amplitude of the pressure and velocity fluctuations, thereby making the detection of the fluctuations easier, especially at low rates of flow.
