The method enables optimization of the processing of connections conducted outside a switching center in peripheral devices of a switching system, which provide no IIW-oriented tasks on their peripheral devices assigned in switching terms. The operating system of the peripheral device and the security engineering running thereof permit quasi-parallel processing of a multiplicity of virtual peripheral devices. It is thereby possible to address every virtual peripheral device with a dedicated logic address via the message interface of the physically assigned peripheral device.
