The invention provides a substance or composition for use at a dosage rate of 20mg - 90mg L-methionine per kilogram body mass per day in a method of treatment of human subjects to enhance the methylation capacity of the subjects, an active ingredient of which is selected from the group consisting of L-methionine and its biologically acceptable salts. The active ingredient is preferably present in a quantity to provide a dosage rate of 20mg - 70mg L-methionine per kilogram body mass per day. The invention is also particularly applicable to animal subjects, and provides the substance or composition for use at a dosage rate of 0,5mg - 100mg L-methionine per kilogram body mass per day for the treatment of animal subjects to enhance the methylation capacity of the subjects. The substance or composition comprising L-methionine may contain at least one additive selected from the group consisting of biologically acceptable magnesium compounds, folic acid and analogues thereof, vitamin B6 and vitamers thereof, and vitamin B12 and vitamers thereof.
