A power supply controller for a magnetic disk apparatus has doubled identical power supply control units for turning on/off a power supply in accordance with a power ON command and a power OFF command from a host device. Each of the power supply control units includes an abnormality detection unit. The abnormality detection unit monitors an abnormal state of a mating one of the power supply control units at a predetermined time interval upon reception of the power ON command and reports detection of an abnormality to the host device.
