Lithium manganese oxide intercalation compounds and methods of their preparation are disclosed. Such compounds are well-suited as electrodes in lithium battery applications. The <u>novel</u> compositions comprise crystallites of spinel Li1+xMn2O4, wherein -0.5~x~0.2, wherein the crystallites are characterized as well-shaped octahedra with average maximum crystalline dimension of greater than 2 micrometers and being formed into agglomerates having a surface area of less than 1m2/g.

L'invention concerne des composés intercalés d'oxyde de manganèse lithié et des procédés de leur préparation. Ces composés conviennent bien en tant qu'électrodes dans des applications liées aux batteries au lithium. Ces nouvelles compositions comprennent des cristallites de spinelles Li¿1+x?Mn¿2?O¿4? dans laquelle -0,5~x~0,2, les cristallites se présentant comme des octaèdres de forme régulière avec des dimensions maximales des cristaux supérieures à 2 micromètres, regroupés en des agglomérats présentant une surface active inférieure à 1 m?2¿/g.
