A substituted high temperature superconductor corresponding to the formula YBa2-z Caz Cu4-x Lix O8 is prepared from a mixture of the precursor compounds Y2O3, BaCO3, Li2CO3 and CaCO3 by a method including the steps of (A) mixing stoichiometric amounts of Y2O3, BaCO3, Li2CO3, and CaCO3 in a mill, (B) placing the mixture in the retort of a tube furnace and evacuating to less than 100 milli Torr, (C) heating the furnace slowly to about 770°C, and holding there for about 48 to 72 hours, (D) admitting oxygen until the pressure reaches one atmosphere, and cooling the mixture in flowing oxygen to 100°C and removing from the furnace, and (E) remilling the mixture to about 100 µm average particle size, pressing into discs, and sintering by heating slowly in a flowing oxygen atmosphere to about 800 to 825°C, holding for about 48 to 120 hours and slowly cooling to 100°C before removing.
