ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention concerns a method of providing a more complete solution to effect the removal and control of mercury and other pollutants entering our surface water, water carriage systems, and their respective drainage areas. The treatment of the invention allows for the treatment of the water systems in their entirety, throughout all seasons of the year, in an effective, and economical manner and one that is easy of practice using semi- skilled and unskilled labour. The treatment medium used is a selected mercury adsorp- tive coal, having the capability of removing mercury from high or low concentrations of mercury solutions in the order of 99.999 per cent removal. By the use of the present method outlined herein the accumulated fall-out of airborne mercury and other pollutants on the winter snow and ice is adsorbed and contained, thereby serving to prevent massive amounts of the pollutants being released into the water at spring breakup time. A master plan is provided to attack in a practical manner all facets of the mercury problem from its point of origin to the eventual disposal of recovered sed- iments, and the treatment of the recovered leachates therefrom.
