A toothbrush having a bristle-bearing head divided into at least two sections (14, 16) is disclosed. The free end section (16), when unstressed, is normally biased to assume an angle of about 15° with respect to the other, to thereby define an articulated head. The two sections of the head have facing ends joined by a thin bridge (30) or hinge section integral with the two head sections, the bridge or hinge forming a groove between adjacent head sections. The upper surface of the bridge section is substantially flush with the upper surface of the head (opposite to the bristle-bearing surface). The space between the two facing ends is filled with a soft elastomer of about 5 to about 30, preferably about 13 to about 30 Shore A hardness. This hinge construction defines an articulated head of limited flex motion, wherein, when utilized by the average adult brusher, who applies an average brushing force of 0.5 pounds, flexes to a substantially flattened position. According to a second aspect of the invention, each end of the groove terminates in a flange at its extreme outer edge, and the groove, including the flange (32), is filled with an elastomer, which, due to the presence of the flange, is resistant to peel stresses caused by flexing of the hinge or joint.
Cette invention se rapporte à une brosse à dents comportant une tête pourvue de soies et divisée en au moins deux parties (14, 16). La partie à extrémité libre (16), lorsqu'elle n'est soumise à aucune contrainte, est sollicitée, dans des conditions de fonctionnement normal, de manière à présenter un angle d'environ 15 DEG par rapport à l'autre partie, et elle définit par conséquent une tête articulée. Les deux parties de la tête possèdent des extrémités qui se font face et qui sont reliées par une fine partie (30) de type charnière ou pont, intégrée aux deux parties de la tête, ledit pont ou ladite charnière formant une gorge entre les deux parties de tête adjacentes. La face supérieure de la partie constituant un pont est sensiblement en affleurement avec la face supérieure de la tête (opposée à la face portant les soies). L'espace entre les deux extrémités qui se font face est rempli d'un élastomère souple possédant une dureté Shore A comprise approximativement entre 5 et 30, et de préférence comprise approximativement entre 13 et 30. Cette construction à charnière définit une tête articulée à flexibilité limitée qui, lorsqu'elle est utilisée par un utilisateur adulte moyen, applique une force de brossage de 0,5 livres, et fléchit jusqu'à adopter une position sensiblement plate. Conformément à un second aspect de l'invention, chaque extrémité de la gorge se termine par une bride au niveau de son bord externe extrême, et la gorge, de même que la bride, est remplie d'un élastomère qui, en raison de la présence de la bride (32), résiste aux contraintes d'arrachement engendrées par le fléchissement de la charnière ou du joint.
