A flexible hand-held abrasive article (10) includes a conformable backup pad (12, 112) having opposed major surfaces, a backing layer (14) affixed to one surface of the backup pad (12, 112) , the backing layer (14) containing a plurality of biaxially oriented openings (36) , and abrasive particles (16) arranged on the backing layer (14) , thereby defining an abrasive surface. A method of making such an abrasive article is also disclosed. The abrasive article (10) may also comprise a backing layer (14) containing a plurality of biaxially oriented slits (20) with abrasive particles (16) arranged at least one surface of the backing layer.
