A computer-supported method (402) is used for determining a characteristic function (Y) from a matrix X0 that contains a defined number of data records (DS) having classifiable features (M). Processing (430) of the matrix and calculation (440)of the characteristic function (Y) are performed by taking into account most of the data records of the processed matrix. Processing (430) is performed by enrichment (431) of the matrix with classes (K) for the features (M) and by compression (432) according to the classes (K). The method (401) [sic; (402)] is controlled by interpretation (450) of a predetermined scheme (200) in which the sequence of individual executions of enrichment (431) and compression (432) and the rules for the particular individual executions are defined.
