A surface pattern (1) is composed of elements (2 to 5) which are arranged in a mosaic-like fashion and of which at least one pattern is formed from a background element (4) and a pixel (2) with microscopically fine relief structures diffracting visible light. The surface elements (3) and the element portions (5) either contain the microscopically fine relief structures diffracting visible light or they comprise reflecting or scattering surfaces. Arranged in the pixel (2) is a first diffraction grating B1 and arranged in the background element (4) is a second diffraction grating B2, wherein the first diffraction grating B1 and the second diffraction grating B2 are a superimposition of at least two different, microscopically fine relief structures F1 and F2 diffracting visible light. The first diffraction grating B1 and the second diffraction grating B2 differ only by virtue of a relative phase shift .DELTA..phi. between the relief structure F1 and the relief structure F2. Upon illumination with polychromatic light the pattern is of a single color which has brightness differences in zones involving different values of the phase shift .DELTA..phi..

L'invention concerne un motif plan (1) constitué d'éléments mosaïqués (2 à 5). Au moins un motif est constitué d'un élément d'arrière-plan (4) et d'un élément image (2) présentant des structures en relief microscopiques, diffractant la lumière visible. Les éléments plans (3) et les éléments partiels (5) contiennent des structures en relief microscopiques, diffractant la lumière visible, ou sont constitués de surfaces réfléchissantes ou de dispersion. Un premier réseau de diffraction B1 est placé dans l'élément image (2) et un deuxième réseau de diffraction B2 est placé dans l'élément d'arrière-plan (4). Le premier réseau de diffraction B1 et le deuxième réseau de diffraction B2 constituent une superposition d'au moins deux structures en relief microscopiques F1 et F2 différentes, diffractant la lumière visible. Le premier réseau de diffraction B1 et le deuxième réseau de diffraction B2 se distinguent uniquement par un déphasage relatif DELTA phi entre la structure en relief F1 et la structure en relief F2. Lors de l'éclairage avec une lumière polychromatique, le motif présente une seule couleur, avec des différences de luminosité dans des zones présentant différentes valeurs de déphasage DELTA phi .
