ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE. Flicker is reduced in high-pressure discharge lamps of a power rating of up to about 400 W, suitable for connection to commercial power networks, by constructing the electrodes in form of a straight shaft portion and a coiled portion (18, 37) facing the discharge, in which the individual coils of the coiled portion do not touch each other, and further including a massive head end element (19, 39) melt-connected to the terminal turn of the coiled portion. This head element, in the direction of the discharge arc, is essentially spherical and, preferably, penetrates into the coiled portion (18, 37) by a distance of at least half the diameter of the electrode shaft wire (17, 36). Preferably, the essentially spherical solid head end element (19, 39) is a ball or sphere with a smooth surface facing the discharge.
