A housing (14) separate from a video camera (12) for remote operation and monitoring, having a control pad (16) with a plurality of switches (generally 18) each movable from a first position to a second position to actuate a selected one of a plurality of operative functions of the video camera (12) and a video display device (34) mounted in the housing (14) which communicates with the video camera for displaying images (35) received by the video camera in response to activation of selected operative functions of the video camera. The video display device (34) further displays text and graphics images (37) representative of the operational status of the video camera (12). A bracket (44) for selectively mounting the housing in a motor vehicle is disclosed, whereby police officers are enabled to operated the video camera while also operating a motor vehicle, particularly in emergency situations. A method of remote operation and monitoring of a video camera is disclosed.
