2102598 9219563 PCTABS00017 A method of forming a ceramic having a smooth ceramic surface and an assembly (10) for forming ceramics having a flat and smooth ceramic surface (16) are disclosed. A greenware precursor (12) is disposed between a greenware base (24) and a greenware cover (34) for limiting compression of the greenware article to an amount which allows formation of a smooth ceramic surface (16) at the point of contact with the greenware base (22) during the densification of the ceramic precursor.The greenware base, a greenware cover and greenware precursor are densified to cause the greenware precursor to form a ceramic having a smooth ceramic surface. A greenware frame (28) may also be used in contact with the greenware precursor at surfaces (30) and (14) so as support cover at surface (32). The greenware assembly (10) is placed on a substrate (24) to provide a support surface (26) during densification.
