A fascimile document ("fax") from a first fax device is transmitted to a second fax device over a telecommunications network, which may be a public switched telephone network, wherein the first fax device is coupled to the telecommunications network by a high speed connection adaptable for carrying transmissions at speeds higher than a 64Kbps voice grade connection. The first and second fax devices are coupled to the telecommunications network by a high speed connection, which may be ATM connections or ISDN connections.
