A process for feeding a companion animal such as a dog or cat a diet containing an effective amount of .beta.-carotene to enhance immune response and improve the overall health of the animal is provided. Preferably, the diet includes from about 1 to about 50 mg/day of .beta.-carotene (from about 6 to about 315 mg .beta.-carotene/kg diet). Such a diet provides sufficient .beta.-carotene to be absorbed by the animal and supplied to the blood and blood leukocytes and neutrophils in the animal.

L'invention a trait à une méthode d'alimentation d'animal de compagnie, un chien ou un chat notamment, reposant sur un régime incluant une quantité efficace de beta -carotène et ce, afin de renforcer la réponse immunitaire de l'animal et d'améliorer son état général. Ce régime alimentaire repose, de préférence, sur l'administration d'environ 1 à environ 50 mg par jour de beta -carotène (d'environ 6 à environ 315 mg de beta -carotène par kilo d'aliment). Ce régime alimentaire est la garantie d'un apport suffisant de beta -carotène au sang de l'animal, notamment à ses leucocytes et neutrophiles.
