ABSTRACT The use of a three-dimensional thermoplastic polymeric layer composed of a ground layer having a sheet structure with or without a multiplicity of perforations or openings, or having a net structure, and which ground layer is provided at least at one major sidle with a multiplicity of projections, as substrate material for the biofilm in a biofilm reactor is disclosed. Furthermore, a biofilm reactor is disclosed containing said polymeric layer as substrate material for the biofilm, as well as a process for the purification of aqueous effluents containing organic waste by means of said biofilm reactor. The substrate material and the biofilm reactor are suitable for use in systems for the purification of waste waters from agro-industries, food industries and beverage industries.
