Apparatus for inserting an instrument (1) in a flexible body cavity is disclosed. The apparatus includes a sheath (3) having an inner chamber (31) for accommodating the instrument (1) and an outer chamber (41) surrounding the inner chamber, thereby defining an enclosed space between the inner chamber and the outer chamber Fluid pressure is temporarily applied to thse enclosed space so as to expand the outer chamber to facilitate insertion of the instrument in the body cavity. In another embodiment the inner chamber is expandable to have a diameter equal to or greater than the diameter of the outer chamber, and wherein the outer chamber incorporates one or more lines of weakness for facilitating release and expansion of the inner chamber and withdrawal of the instrument from the inner chamber. In yet another embodiment the sheath includes at its distal end a convex lens for use by a camera in obtaining images of said body cavity. A flexible housing for receiving the instrument may be provided with a relatively rigid intermediate part between the housing and the sheath for guiding the instrument from said housing to said sheath.

Cette invention concerne un appareil permettant d'insérer un instrument (1) dans une cavité corporelle souple. Ledit appareil comprend une gaine (3) constituée d'une chambre intérieure (31) qui permet de recevoir l'instrument (1), et d'une chambre extérieure (41) entourant la chambre intérieure, un espace fermé étant ainsi défini entre la chambre intérieure et la chambre extérieure. Un fluide sous pression est appliqué provisoirement sur cet espace fermé et fait se dilater la chambre extérieure, ce qui facilite l'insertion de l'instrument dans la cavité corporelle. Dans un autre mode de réalisation de l'invention, la chambre intérieure peut se dilater et atteindre un diamètre égal ou supérieur au diamètre de la chambre extérieure, la chambre extérieure intégrant une ou plusieurs lignes de souplesse pour faciliter le rappel et la dilatation de la chambre intérieure et le retrait de l'instrument hors de la chambre intérieure. Dans un autre mode de réalisation encore, la gaine comprend à son extrémité distale une lentille convexe utilisée par une caméra pour obtenir des images de ladite cavité corporelle. Un étui souple recevant l'instrument peut être pourvu d'une partie intermédiaire relativement rigide entre l'étui et la gaine pour le guidage de l'instrument entre ledit étui et ladite gaine.
