A water-soluble polymer which has higher sensitivity and is responsive to the chirality of a wide range of optically active isomers. It is a poly(phosphonoarylacetylene) represented by the following formula (I) or a salt thereof, (See formula I) (wherein Ar represents an aryl group substituted by a phosphono group; and n is an integer of 5 or larger). Also provided is a chiral sensor or optical resolving reagent each comprising the poly(phosphonoarylacetylene) or its salt.
