A toilet seat raising apparatus 10 comprising a mounting bracket 24 with a cranked arm 26 bearing a counterweight arrangement 28. The mounting bracket 24 is provided on the underside of the toilet seat 28 just behind the pivotal mounting thereof, with the counterweight arrangement 28 weighing a little less than the part of the toilet seat 18 in front of the pivotal mounting of the apparatus 10. A flexible band 34 extends from the cranked arm 26 to a hinged pedal 38, such that placing a foot on the pedal 38 causes the band 34 to engage with the cranked arm 26 and raise the toilet seat
