An air flow system for handling particulate contaminated air has a fan which draws air through the system, the fan being located at a point upstream of a particle separator, so that particles agglomerating on the surfaces of the fan, when released back into the airstream leaving the fan, are primarily entrained in the particle separator. The function of particle agglomeration can be enhanced by use of a liquid spray at the fan inlet, serving to wet the fan active surfaces. For this purpose a recirculating emulsion paint solvent or dispersant is beneficial as the fan inlet spray to capture fine paint particles, while preventing build-up on the fan active surfaces.
