ABSTRACT A flashlight is provided with a housing and a subassembly module connected to the housing. The module has a frame, a printed circuit board fixedly connected to a first side of the frame, and rechargeable batteries removably connected to an opposite second side of the frame. The module also includes contacts extending from the printed circuit board including lamp bulb contacts that extend through an aperture in the frame to the second side of the frame, battery contacts, charging contacts that include a portion located on the exterior of the housing, and control switch contacts that are directly contacted by a selector switch on the housing. The frame includes handle mounting posts for pivotably connecting a handle to the frame. A charging base is provided that includes a receptacle for receiving a front light projecting end of the flashlight. A portion of the base is comprised of light transmitting material such that light will emanate from the base when the flashlight is on and it is connected to the base. The exterior shape of the housing is such that the flashlight can stand on a horizontal surface in at least two positions.
