The mechanical digital shaft is as integral part of the "MECHANICAL DIGITAL GEAR", (U.S. Patent application file # 09/696301). In conjunction with the (PCU), it is a method of converting rotary motion into controllable reciprocating motion and visa versa. Gear teeth reciprocate with in the shaft to mesh and un-mesh with the teeth on the "mechanical digital gear track." The mechanical digital shaft can have from 1-3 teeth that can reciprocate, and can be at zero degrees, at one hundred and eighty degrees, at one hundred and twenty degrees. The shaft case rotate in any direction. The teeth reciprocate, either hydraulically or pneumatically. The pressure is controlled by the "PCU". When the teeth are engaged the pressure is high. When the teeth are required to retract (such as when the direction of travel is to be changed) the pressure is extremely low to the point of almost vacuum.
