A method for increasing the production of methane from a subterranean coal formation penetrated by at least one injection well and at least one production well by-producing methane from the coal formation; passing at least a portion of the methane to a synthesis gas generation zone wherein at least a major portion of the methane is reacted with an oxygen-containing gas to produce a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen; passing at least a major portion of the mixture to a hydrocarbon synthesis zone wherein the carbon monoxide and hydrogen are reacted to produce a mixture of heavier hydrocarbons containing more than one carbon atom per molecule and a tail gas comprising nitrogen and carbon dioxide; separating at least a major portion of the tail gas from at least a major portion of the hydrocarbons and recovering the hydrocarbons as a product stream; compressing at least a portion of the tail gas to a pressure suitable for injection into the coal formation; and injecting at least a portion of the tail gas into the coal formation. The methane may also be obtained from a single well or a plurality of wells operated to produce the methane by a huff and puff process.
Méthode d'accroissement de la production de méthane à partir d'une formation houillère souterraine pénétrée par au moins un puits d'injection et par au moins un puits de production de méthane à partir d'une formation houillère, ladite méthode utilisant les procédés ci-après : communication d'au moins une partie du méthane à une zone de génération de gaz de synthèse où au moins une partie importante du méthane réagit avec un gaz contenant de l'oxygène pour produire un mélange d'hydrogène et d'oxyde de carbone; communication d'au moins une partie importante du mélange à une zone de synthèse d'hydrocarbures, où l'hydrogène et l'oxyde de carbone réagissent et produisent un mélange d'hydrocarbures plus lourds contenant plus d'un atome de carbone par molécule et un gaz résiduaire comprenant de l'azote et de l'anhydride carbonique; séparation d'au moins une partie importante du gaz résiduaire d'au moins une partie importante d'hydrocarbures et récupération des hydrocarbures sous forme de produit; compression d'au moins une partie du gaz résiduaire à une pression convenant à l'injection dans la formation houillère; et injection d'au moins une partie du gaz résiduaire dans la formation houillère. Le méthane peut également être obtenu d'un seul puits ou de plusieurs puits exploités selon le procédé d'injection cyclique en vue de la production de méthane.
