The current invention comprises a method for the selection of a mammalian cell by transfecting a mammalian cell with a nucleic acid comprising a part of a nucleic acid encoding a polypeptide that catalyzes an .alpha.1,6-glycosidic bond formation between fucose and an asparagine-linked N-acetylglucosamine and cultivating the transfected mammalian cell in the presence of Lens culinaris agglutinin (LCA) and selecting a mammalian cell viable under these conditions.
