Valve assembly (3) has a fluid inlet (2) connected to inlet port (7), a fluid conduit (16), and a fluid outlet (4). Outlet (8) of inlet part (7) is selectively opened or closed by control assembly (9) comprising a cap (5) which can be manually rotated via control lever (6); and a bearing surface (10) with an indentation (12). When cap (5) is rotated so that indentation (12) aligns with outlet (8), fluid can flow from inlet (2) into chamber (13) through conduit (16) into chamber (17) and then through outlet (4). Indentation (12) also translates towards or away from outlet (8) when cap (5) turns on screw thread (11). A filter (18) can be installed in chamber (17) if required. Chamber (17) also acts as a mixing chamber if there are two or more inlets. Alternatively chamber (17) can be omitted so that fluid flows directly from chamber (13) to outlet (4). Cap (5) can be mechanically rotated. A tap and a shower mixer including valve assembly (3) are also disclosed.
