A series of data elements may contain special elements. Each such special element is replaced by an indication of the position of the next such special element. The indications do not themselves correspond to special elements, so it is possible, in this way, to remove all the special elements, without greatly increasing the length of the series. Only one additional data element is needed, to indicate the position of the first special element.
