A method and apparatus are provided for converting the terminal voltage of a battery so that one or more operations, such as shut-down or save-to-disk, begin at the appropriate point on the discharge curve for various cell chemistries. A control circuit is provided for triggering end-of-discharge operations based on various predetermined points, such as remaining capacity, voltage, temperature, and safety for devices which utilise a predetermined terminal voltage measurement to trigger one or more operations. The control circuit modulates the terminal voltage of the battery to a value which substantially matches the predetermined terminal voltage threshold of the device upon reaching a predetermined point, thereby successfully triggering operations at the appropriate time. The control circuitry can also modulate the terminal voltage to maintain it above the threshold to delay triggering of one or more operations. The method and apparatus allow devices designed for use with cells of a certain chemistry to be able to suspend operations without losing data or to delay operations to avoid wasting battery capacity when used with cell chemistries different from those for which the devices were designed.
Ce procédé et l'appareil correspondant permettent de convertir la tension aux bornes d'un accumulateur de manière qu'une ou plusieurs opérations, par exemple, l'arrêt ou l'enregistrement sur le disque, débutent au point approprié de la courbe de décharge intéressant différentes substances chimiques d'une pile. Un circuit de commande sert à déclencher les opérations de fin de décharge en fonction de divers points prédéfinis, notamment la capacité restante, la tension, la température et la sécurité et ce, pour des dispositifs utilisant une mesure de tension aux bornes prédéterminée s'agissant de déclencher une ou plusieurs opérations. Ce circuit de commande module la tension aux bornes de l'accumulateur jusqu'à une valeur correspondant sensiblement au seuil prédéterminé de tension aux bornes du dispositif lorsqu'un point prédéfini est atteint, ce qui permet de déclencher avec succès des opérations au bon moment. Ces circuits de contrôle peuvent également moduler la tension aux bornes afin de maintenir celle-ci au-dessus du seuil et ce, afin de différer le déclenchement d'une ou de plusieurs opérations. Ce procédé et l'appareil correspondant font que des dispositifs conçus pour être utilisés avec des piles renfermant une certaine substance chimique sont à même de suspendre des opérations sans perte de données ou de différer des opérations pour éviter l'épuisement de la capacité de l'accumulateur lorsqu'ils sont utilisés avec des piles renfermant des substances chimiques autres que celles pour lesquelles ils ont été conçus.
