A method of stabilising a thermally beneficiated carbonaceous material is disclosed. The method includes the steps of supplying a charge of the carbonaceous material at an elevated temperature to a process vessel to form a packed bed and cooling the carbonaceous material to a target temperature by indirect heat exchange. The method is characterised by supplying an oxygen-containing gas to the packed bed to partially oxidise the carbonaceous material to a required degree to stabilise the carbonaceous material prior to the carbonaceous material reaching the target temperature. The method is also characterised by removing heat from the packed bed that is produced by oxidation of carbonaceous material to control the temperature of the carbonaceous material during oxidation to avoid thermal runaway.

Ce procédé de stabilisation d'une matière carbonée enrichie à chaud comprend les étapes consistant à alimenter une charge de matière carbonée, à température élevée, dans une cuve de traitement, afin de former un lit fixe puis à refroidir la matière carbonée par échange de chaleur indirect, jusqu'à ce que celle-ci atteigne une température cible. Le procédé est caractérisé en ce que l'on fournit un gaz contenant de l'oxygène au lit fixe, afin de partiellement oxyder la matière carbonée, jusqu'au degré voulu, pour stabiliser celle-ci, avant qu'elle n'atteigne la température cible. Le procédé est également caractérisé par l'enlèvement de la chaleur à partir du lit fixe, laquelle est produite par l'oxydation de la matière carbonée, afin de réguler la température de cette matière lors de l'oxydation et éviter l'emballement thermique.
